Bhopal built an ₹18 crore bridge with a 90-degree turn in it

Bhopal, India

Infrastructure, 6 November 2026

Reported

Dear Mamdani, we know you have bridges of your own to worry about.

Bhopal built a new rail overbridge with a 90-degree turn. Not a bend. A corner, of the kind usually found in a room.

First, officials explained that there was no other option, as there wasn't enough land. Then the government called it a faulty design and suspended seven engineers.

We have no complaint about the geometry. It is, by every account, a very committed right angle.

The facts

No jokes in this box. The ones above are ours. These details come from the published reports linked below.

  • The Aishbagh rail overbridge in Bhopal is 648 metres long and cost ₹18 crore.
  • Officials initially defended the design, citing limited land near a metro station.
  • On 28 June 2025, the Madhya Pradesh government cited a faulty design and suspended seven engineers. It also ordered an inquiry against a retired engineer and blacklisted the construction agency and design consultant.
  • The government said the bridge would not be inaugurated until improvements were made.
