A ₹98 crore road in Bihar kept its trees, in the lanes

Jehanabad, India

Infrastructure, 6 November 2026

Reported

Dear Mamdani, a road was widened near Jehanabad at a cost of ₹98 crore. The trees were not consulted, and did not move.

The Forest Department had not cleared them for felling, so, according to officials, the road was built anyway, and the trees now stand in the carriageway.

Reflective strips were added to the trees, which is more safety equipment than most of us were issued.

In fairness, the trees were there first. We believe this gives them right of way.

The facts

No jokes in this box. The ones above are ours. These details come from the published reports linked below.

  • The ₹98 crore project covers about 7.84 km on NH-83 in Jehanabad, Bihar, on the Patna to Gaya route. It was reported on 1 July 2025.
  • The Forest Department withheld clearance to fell the trees. It wanted compensatory land of 3.60 acres, which was not provided.
  • Officials say the contractor built the road anyway, and radium strips were put on the trees for visibility.
