A Vietnamese province built a $600,000 bridge with no road at either end
Nghe An, Vietnam
ReportedDear Mamdani, two villages in Nghe An province were promised a bridge, and they got one. The main structure was finished in May 2025.
There is no road leading to it from either side. The local official said this was because there was no approved source of soil to build the approach roads. Power lines are also in the way.
So more than 1,000 people still cross a narrow suspension bridge, or wade through the stream when it rains.
We have seen many bridges that go nowhere. This is the first we have seen that nobody can get to.
The facts
- The Na Phay-Don Cham Bridge in Que Phong commune, Nghe An province, cost more than VND15 billion (about US$600,000). Construction began in late 2021.
- Its main structure was finished in May 2025, but the access roads at both ends were unfinished, so vehicles couldn't reach it.
- The commune chairman said the delay was due to "the lack of an approved soil source to build the approach roads". The provincial construction department also cited power lines and poles that didn't meet clearance rules.
- More than 1,000 residents of two villages are affected. They use a narrow suspension bridge or wade through the stream in the rainy season.
