Mumbai's Aqua Line lived up to its name within 16 days
Dear Mamdani, Mumbai opened a new stretch of underground metro on 10 May 2025. Its name is the Aqua Line.
On 26 May, water poured into an underground station, and services were suspended.
In fairness, rain in Mumbai is a rare event, occurring only every year. Nobody could have prepared for it, except the person whose job was to switch on the pumps.
We would like to suggest names for the next line. The Dry Line seems worth a try.
The facts
- The stretch was inaugurated on 10 May 2025. On 26 May, rainwater entered Acharya Atre Chowk station, and services between Worli and that station were suspended.
- The metro's operator said sudden, intense rain caused a retaining wall at an under-construction entrance to collapse.
- The contractor was later fined ₹10 lakh. The report cited a failed temporary barrier, and water pumps that were not switched on promptly.
