Signal No. HM-RE004
The Daily WTF
Two bridges in Mumbai were supposed to meet. They missed by nearly two metres.
Dear Mamdani, two bridges in Andheri had one job, which was to meet each other.
They ended up nearly two metres apart in height. The new one had to follow railway height rules. The old one had been there for over a decade, and could have been considered in the planning, being quite large.
The solution was to lift the old flyover with hydraulic jacks.
Problems in Mumbai usually get raised, and that's the end of it. This one was raised 1,397 millimetres. We consider this a national record for a civic issue.
The facts
- In February 2024, the Free Press Journal reported a height difference of nearly two metres between the rebuilt Gokhale bridge and the Barfiwala flyover in Andheri.
- The civic commissioner said railway guidelines required extra height for new overbridges, and the Barfiwala flyover had been built earlier.
- The city asked experts at VJTI for a solution that would avoid demolition.
- By 17 June 2024, the flyover had been lifted by 1,397 mm on one side and 650 mm on the other. Traffic was planned to start from 1 July 2024.
