Why was the Hinjewadi metro delayed?
The project missed several dates, listed here in the order they were reported:
| Target | What was said |
|---|---|
| March 2025 | Original due date, according to Swarajya |
| March 2026 | Officials claimed full operations, in November 2025 |
| 30 June 2026 | The earlier target for the first phase |
| 15 July 2026 | The commissioner said "by 15th July at max" |
| 4 November 2026 | Reported start of passenger services |
Reported reasons include construction through dense areas, a shortage of skilled workers, disrupted supply of electrical and signalling components, an underground water leak and unfinished station structures. Safety authorities gave provisional clearance to the first stretch on 23 July 2026, and officials then spoke of waiting for an inauguration date.
Line details
The elevated line is about 23 km long, with 23 stations. It was reported to cost over ₹8,300 crore. It was built as a public-private partnership by Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited, a Tata-Siemens joint venture.
The sarcastic version
- The Hinjewadi metro went through more deadlines than a software release
- The Hinjewadi metro was ready. It just needed someone to say so.
