Signal No. HM-RE013
The Daily WTF
The Hinjewadi metro was ready. It just needed someone to say so.
Dear Mamdani, your city has a subway, so you'll appreciate this.
In July, safety authorities cleared the first stretch of the Hinjewadi metro. In August, the authority said the corridor was fully prepared. "We are waiting for the date," a project source said. "The metro is ready to operate."
The commuters waited too, in traffic, underneath the metro.
On 3 November, it was inaugurated by video link. Passengers boarded the next day, and we are genuinely glad. We only note that Hinjewadi is full of people who could have set up that call.
The facts
- On 23 July 2026, the rail safety commissioner gave provisional authorisation for a stretch of about 13 km, covering 12 stations.
- On 3 August, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority said the corridor was "fully prepared for passenger services" and was pressing the state government to finalise an inauguration.
- On 18 August, the Free Press Journal reported an official as saying the Prime Minister's schedule was not free before 2 October, and that developers were willing to wait for a high-profile launch.
- Clearances for more stations came after July. By late October, 17 stations had been cleared.
- The Prime Minister inaugurated the line by video link on 3 November 2026. Passenger services were scheduled to begin on 4 November.
