Why Chakan traffic is so bad, and what has been promised

Last checked 6 November 2026. Situations change, so check the sources before you rely on this.

Chakan traffic is bad because large industrial estates are reached through narrow approach roads, with potholes and several agencies sharing responsibility. The Chakan Industrial Association has said that commutes take 2 to 2.5 hours each way. The state has promised fixes within 10 months of August 2026.

The facts here are serious. The letters about them are not.

What is causing the Chakan traffic problem?

  • Narrow approach roads. The association's representative gave approach road widths of 8 and 12 metres, against 70 and 45 metres for internal MIDC roads.
  • Potholes and repeated repairs. Punekar News described congestion lasting nearly a decade, with potholes among the causes.
  • Pinch points. That report named five congestion points on the Pune-Nashik Highway and three narrow bridges on the Talegaon-Chakan Road.
  • A long-pending bypass. The same report describes the Chakan bypass as a major long-term fix that has yet to arrive.
  • Divided responsibility. The state lists PWD, MIDC, MSRDC, NHAI and PMRDA among the bodies managing these roads.

Are companies leaving Chakan?

In August 2026, about 20 companies were reported to be planning to shift or expand from Chakan MIDC to Khandala. Of 40 that first responded, 35 filed applications for plots. One industrialist called it "a decision against our will". These are reported plans, and we have not confirmed how many companies have moved.

What has the government promised?

  • A high-level committee under the Pune collector, set up by a government resolution on 14 August 2026, with 10 months for planning, approvals and implementation. That points to around mid-June 2027.
  • A road and traffic master plan, covering roads, junctions, drainage, signals and parking.
  • All potholes repaired by 31 August 2026, according to Industries Minister Uday Samant. We could not confirm whether this was met.
  • Roads widened by three metres, and contractors who miss deadlines blacklisted.
  • A weekly grievance session with the collector on Fridays.
