Signal No. HM-RE015

Chakan's factory roads are 70 metres wide, until you try to reach them
Dear Mamdani, Chakan's industrial estate has internal roads 70 metres and 45 metres wide. The approach roads that lead to them are 12 metres and 8 metres wide.
That is an excellent road system, if you were born inside it.
The commute takes up to 2.5 hours each way, according to the local industry association. So workers lose about four hours a day, which is a generous contribution to the national road experience.
Some companies have now applied for plots elsewhere. One industrialist called it "a decision against our will". This is also how we would describe the Chakan commute.
The facts
- In August 2026, Upstox reported that about 20 companies planned to shift or expand from Chakan MIDC to Khandala. Of 40 that responded initially, 35 filed applications for plots.
- The Chakan Industrial Association's representative said commutes take 2 to 2.5 hours each way. He gave approach road widths of 8 and 12 metres, against 70 and 45 metres for internal MIDC roads.
- Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the problems "very genuine". The state set up a high-level committee under the Pune collector, with a 10-month timeline.
