New York now has a whole mayoral office for rats
New York, United States
ReportedDear Mamdani, for once, this one is in your city.
In December 2025, New York set up the Mayor's Office of Rodent Mitigation. It is the first mayoral office in the city's history devoted entirely to rats. It does not catch rats. It coordinates the departments that deal with the rubbish the rats eat.
The city already had a rat czar, rat walks and a Rat Academy. The office now has a director.
The rats have not commented. They are famously patient, and they have been in the city longer than any of the departments.
The facts
- In December 2025, Mayor Eric Adams signed Executive Order No. 63, creating the Mayor's Office of Rodent Mitigation.
- Time Out New York described it as the first stand-alone mayoral office in the city's history devoted entirely to rats.
- The office coordinates city agencies, including Sanitation, Health, Parks and the housing authority, rather than trapping rats itself. It is led by a mayor-appointed director.
- The city appointed its first rat czar, Kathleen Corradi, about two years earlier. Outreach includes Rat Academies and volunteer rat walks.
- At the time, the city said inspections finding active rat signs were at a five-year low.
